In der vorliegenden Studie wird die Cappella Gregoriana als Keimzelle der Ausstattung von Neu-St.-Peter untersucht. Sie wird im kunst- und kulturgeschichtlichen Kontext unter Betrachtung neuer Quellen interpretiert. Am 11. Juni 1580 liess Papst Gregor XIII. im Rahmen einer als Grossanlass durchgefuhrten Prozession die im Kloster S. Maria in Campo Marzio in Rom aufbewahrten Reliquien Gregors von Nazianz in die nordostliche Eckkapelle von Neu-St.-Peter uberfuhren. Mit der Deposition der Reliquien in der nach ihrem Stifter benannten Cappella Gregoriana wurde der erste vollstandig ausgestattete und liturgisch funktionsfahige Innenraum der neuen Basilika offiziell eingeweiht. Die unter der Leitung des Architekten Giacomo Della Porta mit Inkrustationen und Mosaiken reich ausgestattete Cappella Gregoriana erregte beim zeitgenossischen Publikum umso grosseres Aufsehen, als sich Neu-St.-Peter nach uber siebzigjahriger Bauzeit immer noch als Rohbau und ohne die grosse Kuppel prasentierte. In der vorliegenden Studie geht es nun hauptsachlich darum, den Raum als Keimzelle der Ausstattung von Neu-St.-Peter zu untersuchen und ihn im kunst- und kulturgeschichtlichen Kontext zu interpretieren. Zu diesem Zweck wurden erstmals die verstreut veroffentlichten sowie viele neu erschlossene Quellen aufbereitet und systematisch zusammengestellt.
