Obwohl das Siegel ein verbreitetes Bildmedium im europaischen Mittelalter war, ist es lange ausschliesslich als Rechtszeichen wahrgenommen worden und folglich eine Quelle der Geschichtswissenschaft geblieben. Der Kunstgeschichte, die dem Siegel trotz seiner reichen Ikonographie und seiner aufwandigen kleinplastischen Gestaltung bislang wenig Interesse entgegengebracht hat, bieten sich durch bildwissenschaftliche Impulse jedoch neue Ansatze. Die hier versammelten Beitrage aus beiden Disziplinen gehen am Beispiel der korporativen Siegel des Spatmittelalters der Frage nach, welche Bilder eine vielgliedrige Gruppe fur ihre spezifische Identitat fand und wie sich dabei mit den Traditionen des Mediums auseinandersetzte.
