Otyimbingue, was ubersetzt “Schattenort mit vielen Baumen” bedeutet, liegt etwa 100 Kilometer westlich von Windhoek, an der Einmundung des Omusema in den Swakop. Gegrundet im Jahr 1849 war Otyimbingue bis 1890 Hauptquartier der ehemaligen deutschen Kolonie sowie Missions-, Handels- und Raststation. Die Geschichte von Otyimbingue beginnt jedoch nicht erst im Jahr 1849, als sich der Missionar Johannes Rath dort niederliess, sondern ist Teil der Geschichte Sudwestafrikas, des spateren Deutsch-Sudwestafrika bzw. des heutigen Namibia. Dieser Geschichte widmet sich der Autor im ersten Teil des vorliegenden Buches eingehend. In einem zweiten Teil thematisiert er die Postagentur Otyimbingue. Zahlreiche historische und zeitgenossische Abbildungen erganzen die ersten beiden Teile ebenso wie die mehr als 400 Abbildungen und Beschreibungen zum Poststempel Otyimbingue, den Winfried Adolf im dritten Teil dokumentiert.
