Heterolinguism is understood as the way the literature receives linguistic diversity (be it foreign languages or varieties of the main idiom). As the example of Quebec shows, this diversity is tied to major aesthetic and identity issues.

Review - French La litterature quebecoise n'a pas attendu la Revolution tranquille pour exhiber son exceptionnelle richesse langagiere. Au XIXe siecle deja, les romans, contes et legendes du Quebec se referent a des niveaux de langue plus populaires, citent l'anglais de Shakespeare ou de Walter Scott, le latin de Virgile ou celui de ceremonies religieuses, et font resonner des bribes d'amerindien ou de creole. Que dit ce choc de langues ? Quels rapports s'y expriment, concernant notamment la societe mais aussi la litterature qu'on cherche alors a fonder ? En repondant a ces questions, la presente etude fait revivre sous un jour comparatiste une epoque souvent negligee de la litterature quebecoise et montre que celle-ci, des ses origines, parlait plusieurs langues.
