English summary: Genre studies have so far paid little attention to the Arab essay, although Arabic authors have certainly been productive in the field. This study describes the ‘Arab Essay’ as a distinct literary genre, traces its progression and illustrates the characteristics of this genre. With the emergence of journalism in the Arab world, the essay became a popular genre at end of the 19th century. Many intellectuals used this form of text in order to analyze political and social changes, debate social and political issues in public, or in order to experiment with different literary styles. The rise of the newspaper provided the authors with a broad audience, yet this new medium also called for a new way of writing and a new vocabulary that would do justice to the issues of the time.
