Das Programm der beruhmten ‘bauhausbucher’ aus den 1920er Jahren sah auch eine Veroffentlichung Oskar Schlemmers unter dem Titel ‘Buhnenelemente’ vor. Doch die publizistischen Moglichkeiten schwanden um 1929/30 in Folge der Weltwirtschaftskrise. Erst 1969 konnte der vorliegende Band aus dem Nachlass Schlemmers zusammengestellt werden. Grundlage sind Schlemmers Vorlesungsunterlagen seines Kurses ‘Der Mensch’ von 1928, die er nicht mehr zum Buch ausarbeiten konnte. Wie man mit aller Deutlichkeit sieht, war seine gedankliche Konzeption mit der des Bauhauses kongruent wie sonst nur die von Gropius und Moholy-Nagy. So bedeutungsvoll die durch die Technik aufgeworfene Problematik und ihre Bewaltigung fur das Bauhaus gewesen sind – das Ziel, dem alles untergeordnet wurde und blieb, war das soziale Wesen Mensch und, bei allem sozialen Engagement, das Individuum.
