Since ancient times, the sky functions as a symbolic space where – beyond fixed ideas of time, space and identity – the relation between the individual and the cosmos, as well as related fundamental questions of human existence and concepts of values, are negotiated. In this way, the ethical approach to the sky raises a range of questions, embedded in the context of interdisciplinary fields of research and cultural horizons. Besides the examination of these questions, the aesthetic realization of such perspectives is of central importance. Scientific as well as religious texts that grapple with these problems and use the sky as a “projection screen” unfold an enormous literary-rhetoric power. The study of the ethical implications of such potentials is the essential aim of this volume.
