Rainer Schwindt analyzes the ‘cosmological hermeneutics’ found in Ephesians from the standpoint of the history of religion and explores its position in the early Christian history of theology. He bases his comparative study on the spiritual understanding of salvation in Alexandrian Judaism and the demonological paradigm of the Platonic line of tradition. As a unity of Jewish and pagan Christians, the church is the new Daimonion, which warns the cosmic powers of God’s salvation, his pleroma. Der vielschichtige traditions- und religionsgeschichtliche Zusammenhang gibt der Exegese nach wie vor Probleme auf. Zu bedenken ist vor allem die Bedeutung des zugrunde liegenden Weltbildes fur die theologischen Aussagen. Besonders das Heilswirken Christi und das Kirchenverstandnis unterliegen einer kosmologischen Hermeneutik. Als die Ekklesia der schon ‘jetzt’ mit Christus auferweckten und zu Gottes Thron erhohten Glaubigen ist die Kirche ‘Leib’ Christi und ‘Fulle’ Gottes. Obwohl erlost, stehen die Christen dennoch weiter im Entscheidungskampf mit den himmlischen damonischen Machten.Rainer Schwindt arbeitet diese Dialektik ideen- und religionshistorisch auf und ordnet sie im Umfeld des Urchristentums theologiegeschichtlich ein. Entscheidende Vergleichsgrossen sind das spirituelle Heilsverstandnis des alexandrinischen Judentums und das damonologische Paradigma der platonischen Traditionslinie. Als Einheit von Juden- und Heidenchristen ist die Kirche das neue Daimonion, das den kosmischen Machten Gottes Heilsfulle, sein ‘Pleroma’, mahnend vor Augen stellt. Zeitlich und inhaltlich ist der Brief inmitten jener Entwicklung zu plazieren, die von den zur Zeit des Paulus und des Apollos virulenten Auseinandersetzungen um das rechte geistinspirierte Verstandnis von Schrift und Christuskerygma bis zum Streit uber den Auferstehungsglauben der Gnostiker Hymenaus und Philetus (2Tim 2,18) zu Beginn des 2. Jahrhunderts gefuhrt hat.
