Das idyllisch in einem Seitental nordlich von Langenbruck gelegene Schontal ist das alteste Kloster des Kantons Basel-Landschaft. Die Grundung der Grafen von Frohburg wird 1145 erstmals erwahnt. 1187 war der Bau der heute noch weitgehend erhaltenen Kirche mit ihrem bemerkenswerten Skulpturenschmuck vollendet. Anhand der archaologischen und bauhistorischen Befunde zeichnet die Autorin die Geschichte der Klosteranlage nach: von den Anfangen als Doppelkloster fur Monche und Nonnen des Benediktinerordens uber die Zeit der Serviten bis hin zur Umnutzung nach der Reformation – erst als Sennhof des Basler Burgerspitals und schliesslich als privater Landsitz. Diese erste archaologische Bestandsaufnahme wirft ein neues Licht auf eine der wichtigsten Kulturerbestatten der Region. Die Autorin bezieht samtliche verfugbare Quellen ein, erganzt um Expertisen zum plastischen Dekor der Kirchenfassade, zu den Wandmalereifragmenten, zum Fundmaterial und zu den Bestattungen. Dieser umfassende Blick ermoglicht zahlreiche neue Erkenntnisse – der Band wird so zur Referenz fur zukunftige Forschungen.
