English summary: The Italian mission in Carthage, directed by Antonino di Vita, operated between 1973 and 1977 as part of the UNESCO project to safeguard the ancient metropolis. This volume collects the results of the archaeological excavations carried out at the site, directed by Andea Carandini, aimed at verifying the limits of the Roman city, the relationships between rural centuriation and urban layout, between urban planning and its implementation, and between city and necropolis. The stratigraphies and findings of the three areas under investigation, located in one of the least known sectors of Carthage, but decisive in providing answers to the questions posed by the fieldwork, are illustrated in detail along with a wide selection of graphs, drawings, and photos. Roads, insulae, monuments (defensive walls of Theodosius II and the gateway to the city), cemeteries (Punic, Roman, Vandal) appear within a narrative in which the re-birth (the Augustan colony of 29 B.C.) and the end of the city (the capture at the hands of the Arabs and the destruction of 698 A.D.) are punctually reflected in the archaeological record.
