English summary: A vital role within Byzantine literature is played by epigrams. A considerable number (more than 1000) are still preserved in situ, found on frescoes, mosaics, portable icons, and small objets d’art. In addition, inscriptional epigrams have also been transmitted in manuscripts, where they are used as margins of miniatures or as figure poems. This first volume of the series Byzantinische Epigramme in inschriftlicher Uberlieferung is devoted to epigrams on frescoes and mosaics. More than 250 epigrams on frescoes and almost 20 epigrams on mosaics have been preserved from the period between 600 and 1500 CE. In a detailed introduction, questions concerning the definition, the history, and the form of Byzantine epigrams are discussed; in addition, attention is given to the specific characteristics of epigrams on frescoes and mosaics. The main part of the book consists of a critical edition of all the epigrams under consideration, their German translation, as well as a commentary focusing on philological, linguistic and historical matters. German description: Epigramme spielen innerhalb des literarischen Schaffens der Byzantiner eine wichtige Rolle. In nicht geringer Anzahl (mehr als 1000 Stuck) sind diese auch heute noch inschriftlich erhalten, sei es auf Fresken, Mosaiken, Ikonen, auf so genannten Objekten der Kleinkunst und in Handschriften, in denen sie als Rahmen von Miniaturen fungieren oder Figurengedichte bilden. Der vorliegende erste Band der Reihe “Byzantinische Epigramme in inschriftlicher Uberlieferung” widmet sich Epigrammen auf Fresken und Mosaiken. Aus dem Untersuchungszeitraum (600 n. Chr.-1500 n. Chr.) sind mehr als 250 Epigramme auf Fresken und knapp 20 Epigramme auf Mosaiken uberliefert. In einer ausfuhrlichen Einleitung wird auf Fragen der Definition, der Geschichte und der ausseren Gestaltung byzantinischer Epigramme ebenso wie auf die Besonderheiten byzantinischer Epigramme auf Fresken und Mosaiken eingegangen. Im Hauptteil der Arbeit folgen die kritische Edition der Epigramme, deren deutsche Ubersetzung und ein philologisch-sprachlicher sowie historisch-realienkundlicher Kommentar. Indices zu Epigrammanfangen, griechischen Wortern, biblischen, antiken und byzantinischen Stellen und ein allgemeiner Index zu Orten und Personen runden den Band ab. Zur optischen Veranschaulichung sind fast alle behandelten Epigramme auch bildlich in einem Tafelteil dokumentiert.
