Denn mit ihrem Eintritt in ein digitales Zeitalter hat sich die Gegenwart des Fotografischen auf bemerkenswerte Weise ausgedehnt und intensiviert.
In seiner grundlegenden Studie nimmt Steffen Siegel Kontinuitäten wie Brüche zwischen analogen und digitalen Belichtungen in den Blick. Anhand künstlerischer Fotografien aus den zurückliegenden vierzig Jahren werden hierbei zentrale Fragen einer Ästhetik dieses Bildmediums diskutiert.
Kritisch betrachtet werden international prominente Positionen der jüngeren Fotogeschichte, unter ihnen Jeff Wall und Andreas Gursky, Ugo Mulas und Duane Michals, Timm Rautert und Thomas Struth. Vorgestellt und erstmals eingehend untersucht werden außerdem jüngst entstandene fotografische Werke, unter anderem von Philipp Goldbach und Adrian Sauer, Idris Khan und Sebastian Stumpf, Shizuka Yokomizo und Frank Höhle.
