More than any other era, the Age of Enlightenment is considered by historians, sociologists and philosophers to hold a fundamental significance for the mental and institutional and structural constitution of present-day European societies. This study claims that fiction participates in social reflection on Enlightenment in a productive way. Since the 1980s, numerous novels have been published in Germany and France which depict the Age of Enlightenment through literature, and reflect on it and its influence up to the present day. In a comparative approach to novels ranging from Patrick Suakind’s “Das Parfum” to Daniel Kehlmann’s “Die Vermessung der Welt” and Chantal Thomas’ “Les Adieux a la Reine”, this study examines which narrative strategies are used to portray the Enlightenment and its protagonists in German and French contemporary literature and which different lines of perception can be derived from them. Fiktionale Literatur partizipiert, so die These dieser Studie, an der gesellschaftlichen Reflexion uber Aufklarung in produktiver Weise. Seit den 1980er Jahren sind in Deutschland und Frankreich zahlreiche Romane erschienen, die die Aufklarungszeit literarisch inszenieren und – auch in ihrem Wirken in die Gegenwart – reflektieren. An Romanen von Patrick Suskinds ‘Das Parfum’ bis zu Daniel Kehlmanns ‘Vermessung der Welt’ und Chantal Thomas’ ‘Les Adieux a la Reine’ wird komparatistisch untersucht, mit welchen Erzahlstrategien Aufklarung und ihre Akteure in der deutschen und franzosischen Gegenwartsliteratur dargestellt werden und welche unterschiedlichen Rezeptionslinien sich dabei herauskristallisieren.
