According to critical doxa, Contre Sainte-Beuve imposed the separation of the creative self and the social self. But Proust is not the first to have rejected Sainte-Beuve’s method. This volume sheds light on the writers who, before the author of the Recherche, put biographical criticism on trial.

Michel Brix, head of research at the University of Namur (Belgium), is the author of 40 works and some 250 articles devoted to French literature. A significant part of his work concerns Nerval, Sainte-Beuve, and Romanticism. He is also interested in the emergence of the critical modernity which, at the time of Flaubert, put an end to the literary “Ancien Regime”.
