In 2012, Walter Wimmel, professor emeritus for classical philology at the Philipps-Universitat Marburg, celebrated his 90th birthday. This joyful occasion provided an opportunity for an academic ceremony in honor of an important scholar who not only had a great influence on classical philology in Marburg over the course of many decades, but who deserves gratitude from the entire discipline for the essential methodological and thematic impulses he provided. The title of this volume (“Am langen Seil des Altertums”, (on the long leash of antiquity) draws on one of Wimmel’s dictums that illustrates the depth of his thought and the breadth of his research. It tells of his conviction that modernity is characterized by an unbreakable and undeniable closeness to antiquity. The volume presents the contributions written for the occasion of the ceremony. German text.

German description: Walter Wimmel, emeritierter Professor fur Klassische Philologie an der Philipps-Universitat Marburg, feierte 2012 seinen 90. Geburtstag.
