The premature end of a very early pregnancy is rarely discussed publicly. It can cause great pain for those affected and their partners. Especially when their loss and grief are not acknowledged by those around them or by society. It is also not clear from the outset what actually characterizes the loss: A healthy pregnancy? A life in the making? The biological child? The chance to be a parent? The book explores how grief and recognition are related to loss in early pregnancy and how this is shaped by the perception of pregnancy and motherhood. Anyone who wants to name what is lost must first gain clarity about the ethical-onto-epistemological practice of how an early loss is recognized, under what conditions this happens for the coming into existence of human life and how recognition of it is established. Motifs, such as “maternal mourning” and the divine remembrance of names, can be understood as part of this ethical-onto-epistemological practice.
