In Rome, the young Michelangelo found himself thrown into an environment full of novelty and of rivalry, but one in which he would find faithful friends and passionate patrons, and, above all, would become himself, the great arbiter of naturalism that the twentieth century would rediscover and define.
The great fascination that Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio still exerts on viewers makes it possible to tell his story in a way that illuminates all the Italian and European art-historical events between the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
Professor Cappelletti is a full professor of Art History at the University of Ferrara and holds prestigious roles as director of the Galleria Borghese and scientific director of the Fondazione Ermitage Italia.
After graduating and completing her PhD at Sapienza University of Rome, and further studies in London and Paris, she specialized in the study of Italian art collecting from the Renaissance to the 19th century, with a particular focus on the Baroque period. Her research on Caravaggio, conducted with Laura Testa, helped attribute The Taking of Christ to the artist; the painting is now housed in the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin.
