The Latin oeuvre of the French early humanist Martin Le Franc (14081461) is one of the most recent discoveries of neo-Latin literature. While in De bono mortis the author seeks to overcome a personal experience of loss through dialectical self-contemplation in the tradition of introspective consolation dialogues, Agreste otium deals with the Hundred Years’ War, the Council of Basel, and the significance of fate and fortuna in human life, contemporary core themes that also characterize his widely acclaimed French-language oeuvre.
