Fur die Kirche von Jerusalem war die Zeit um das Jahr 800 eine Umbruchszeit: Ihre Vorsteher waren an einem Geschehen beteiligt, das die Geschichte des Nahen Ostens auf immer veranderte. Im Jahre 797 sandte der Frankenkonig Karl, der bereits fast alle Kriege in Europa fur sich entschieden hatte, erstmals Boten an den Kalifen Harun ar-Rasid, die auf ihrem Weg nach Bagdad in Jerusalem haltmachten. Damit war die neue Weltmacht im Nahen Osten angekommen. Von nun an sollte der Patriarch von Jerusalem eine zunehmend wirkmachtige Rolle bei der diplomatischen Annaherung zwischen Frankenreich und Abbasidenreich spielen. Doch dies war nur die eine Seite der Medaille. Denn just jene Zeit der politischen Prominenz der Jerusalemer Patriarchen war zugleich die Wendezeit, in der erst in Syro-Palastina eine muslimische Mehrheit aufkam, wahrend die Christen zur bedrohten Minderheit wurden – ein Status, der im Mittelalter fur sie als selbstverstandlich gelten sollte. Diesen Widerspruch zu verstehen, hat sich Nestor Kavvadas mit diesem Band zum Ziel gesetzt.
