French description: Medecin et maitre spirituel celebre en son temps (France, Italie et Espagne, deuxieme moitie du XIIIe siecle), Arnau de Villeneuve, protege par les papes Boniface VIII et Clement V qu’il avait gueris de maladies douloureuses, a subi apres sa mort une eradication aussi systematique que possible de toutes traces de ses ecrits par ses adversaires. Theologien de talent verse dans l’alchimie et l’astrologie, il devient rapidement un maitre spirituel tres ecoute, prophetisant le retour de l’Antechrist et la fin des temps. Ne reconnaissant qu’une autorite singuliere, la sienne, ainsi que celle de toute personnalite individuelle, il conteste celle des institutions, denonce les maux du siecle et designe les coupables. Rapidement inquiete par les tribunaux, suspecte d’heterodoxie et d’heresie, il ne doit son salut qu’a sa reputation de medecin. Prevoyant de son vivant que tout ce qui pourrait etre jete au feu de ses ecrits le serait, il a developpe une puissance peu commune de publication litteraire, son organisation editoriale de grande envergure permettant a certains de ses traites une large diffusion… et leur survie partielle. Jean Canteins dresse tout d’abord le panorama de la vie exceptionnelle et de l’oeuvre d’Arnau de Villeneuve tenant compte des derniers acquis de la recherche. Il a privilegie dans la deuxieme partie la traduction des traites catalans qui ont subsiste, a l’authenticite reconnue et ayant l’avantage d’offrir sous une forme concise un apercu assez complet des themes developpes dans les multiples textes latins dont l’attribution reste, elle, encore douteuse pour certains. Enfin la troisieme partie ebauche le repertoire des hommes et des femmes qui ont recu, connu ou pris en consideration le message arnaldien.
