By (author) P.-M. Morel
References to nature, whether normative or descriptive, cross the essential themes of Aristotle’s ethics: the ultimate end, the acquisition of virtues, pleasure and emotions, relational bonds, justice and city life, responsibility. Aristotelian ethics is not, however, naturalistic in the sense that the human good is derived from natural tendencies and predisposition. This book, by making a systematic study of the reference to nature in Aristotelian ethics, defends a new interpretation of Aristotle’s practical naturalisma critical naturalism, mostly dialectical, which questions the basic conditions of the human good: not a scientific naturalism, where biology would be the source of moral prescriptions, but a problematic naturalism that delimits possibilities of action. One of the primary tasks of the ethical theorist is precisely to evaluate the extent to which the human good depends on nature or is freed from it.
