The book offers a philosophically annotated translation of Zeami’s ancient Japanese text on the practice and aesthetics of No theater. The text not only describes the actor’s practice in various aspects, but Zeami also develops central aesthetic categories for the reception of No theater. The translation is supplemented by interpretive essays on topics such as the mask in No theater, the use of the body, and an aesthetics of breathing.
