Ulm gehort zu den wenigen suddeutschen Reichsstadten, die bereits im Spatmittelalter ein bedeutendes Territorium aufbauen konnten. Dazu erwarben die Burger 1396 von den Grafen von Helfenstein(-Wiesensteig) deren Herrschaft Helfenstein mit der gleichnamigen Burg, der Stadt Geislingen an der Steige und uber 25 Dorfern im weiteren Umfeld sowie Gerichten, Zollen und Waldarealen. In den Jahren 1415 und 1416 fertigte die Ulmer Stadtkanzlei auf Basis einer alteren Vorlage ein umfangreiches Verzeichnis der Bestandteile dieser Herrschaft an, das “Salbuch der Herrschaft Helfenstein”, das in zwei Schritten 1418/20 und 1423/24 unter der Leitung des Stadtschreibers Ambrosius Neithardt auf den jeweils aktuellen Stand gebracht wurde. Mit zahlreich enthaltenen Orts- und Flurnamen sowie uber 1.200 Namen einzelner Personen stellt das Salbuch eine herausragende Quelle der siedlungs- und sozialgeschichtlichen Erforschung der ostlichen Schwabischen Alb dar, mit Schwerpunkt im mittleren und oberen Filstal, dem Nordrand der Lonetal-Kuppenalb und dem Albuch. Daruber hinaus liefert es grundlegende Informationen zur Entwicklung des Ulmer Territoriums im ersten Viertel des 15. Jahrhunderts wie auch der Wirtschafts- und Verwaltungspraxis der Reichsstadt in dieser Zeit.
