Following the recent systematic archaeological research carried out by Greek and foreign scholars in various sites all over Greece, under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, the aforementioned theme is proposed with the aim to acknowledge the organization of space as constituent of social behavior. Presentations are focused on new excavation data from recent field projects in Greece, characterized by variation in period and region, with the aim to present the scientific work of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, as well as its commitment in the conservation, protection and enhancement of cultural heritage.
Since the analysis of spaces and places remains an essential interpretive tool for ancient history, the study of the landscape and spatial organization of an urban area can shed light on the social identities, as these may be expressed in different spatial contexts. The use and organization of space is intimately connected with the social processes by which the space is created and recreated. In this context, the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports’ AIA 2023 session is focusing on exploring the way in which urban landscapes originally functioned as social settings, in an attempt to connect the social and political structures of urban populations with the spatial organization of their built environment.
