Der Dom zu Trier nimmt eine Ausnahmestellung in der Baugeschichte ein. Vom Gründungsbau des 4. Jahrhunderts bis in die 1970er Jahre hat nahezu jede Epoche der europäischen Architekturgeschichte Anteil an seinem Erscheinungsbild. Mit der Publikation liegt nun erstmals ein präzises und durch Befunde gesichertes Bild der über 1600-jährigen Baugeschichte vor. Fotografien und Planmaterial untermauern die Analyse, 3D-Visualisierungen stellen die komplexen Ergebnisse so anschaulich dar, dass sie auch dem Laien einen schnellen und verständlichen Zugang zur Entstehungsgeschichte des Baus ermöglichen.

Trier Cathedral occupies a unique position in architectural history. From its founding in the 4th century to the 1970s, almost every era of European architectural history has contributed to its heterogeneous appearance, whether through extensions or extensive renovations or demolitions. Until now, only a few details of its long history have been understood, making it an urgent topic for research. The subtitle “Building History and Building Archaeology” sums up the theme and methodology of this study. The investigation focuses on the physical structure, allowing the building itself to become the source of its history. This publication now provides a precise and fact-based picture of the building’s 1600-year history. Photographs and plans support the analysis of the construction sequence and building structure, while 3D visualizations summarize the complex findings so clearly that even interested laypeople can quickly and easily understand the unusual history of the building’s development. The study is supplemented by contributions on the archaeological findings of the late antique ‘square building’, the dendrochronological dating of the construction timber, and the art-technological examination of a fragmentary early Romanesque wall painting hidden above the vaults
