“Frage: Was ist die Zeit? – Antwort: Die Zeit ist der Raum, der sich vom Anfang bis zum Ende spannt. – Frage: Wieviele Teile hat die Zeit? – Antwort: Die Zeit hat 14 Teile: das Atom, den Moment, die Minute, den Punkt, die Stunde, den Vierteltag, den Tag, die Woche, den Monat, die Jahreszeit, das Jahr, das Jahrtausend (saeculum), das Zeitalter, die Welt.” Mit diesen Satzen begann der ‘Computus Hibernicus’, eine lateinische Schrift, die 689 in Irland von einem namenlosen Autor verfasst, 719 neu bearbeitet und 817 in Regensburg abgeschrieben wurde. Dreizehnhundert Jahre spater fragen wir immer noch, was die Zeit eigentlich ist. Die hier vorgelegten Ausgaben beenden Arno Borsts Studien zur Nutzung, Gliederung und Deutung der Zeit im europaischen Fruhmittelalter, die ihn seit 1968 beschaftigen. Nach einer ausfuhrlichen Einleitung uber Probleme, Geschichte und Uberlieferung der Komputistik und dem Verzeichnis der Handschriften, das allein 112 Seiten umfasst und als vorlaufige Ubersicht komputistischer Schriften vom 8. bis 12. Jahrhundert dienen kann, ediert Borst 20 Komputistische Schriften, vom aquitanischen Vorwort zur Ostertafel von 721 bis zur Salzburger Enzyklopadie von 818, nach 135 Handschriften und 2 Drucken verschollener Codices. Der Autor liefert damit ein grundlegendes Standardwerk fur die Beschaftigung mit fruhmittelalterlicher Komputistik.
