English summary: At a time when general misgivings abound about the advances being made by conventional medicine -which seems to have exhausted its potential – alternativemedicines are booming and growing increasingly popular. They are even being used as complementary therapy by a large portion of populations in developing countries, when they are not being adopted outside of Europe as the dominant traditional standard. The author’s aim in this work is to help readers understand these phenomena, initially by recreating the context of a dominant form of medicine now facing acrisis. It offers a comprehensive panorama of these alternative or ” soft ” medicines, from their most commonthemes to a profile of those who advocate their use, and examines the combination of imaginary andrationality which permeate their discourse and practices.Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of Universite Jean-Moulin Lyon 3, Jean-Jacques Wunenburger is the Associate Director of the Centre de recherches G.Bachelard of Universite de Bourgogne. He has published a number of scientific works.
