Die dem Zweiten Weltkrieg folgende Aufteilung der Welt hatte nicht nur die politische Spaltung in zwei feindliche Lager zur Folge, sondern wirkte sich auch auf die Kultur, auf die Medien im Allgemeinen und auf das Printmedium im Besonderen aus. Der Kalte Krieg war auch ein Krieg der Worte und der Bilder. Massenmedien und wissenschaftliche Publikationen, Bestandsaufbau und bibliothekarische Ausbildung, Zensur und Liberalitat, internationale Bibliotheks- und Leseforderungsprogramme sind Felder, die zu erforschen ebenso notwendig wie aufschlussreich ist – national und weltweit. Die Beitrage dieses Bandes strukturieren die vielschichtige Thematik in drei Bereiche: Die Bibliotheken wahrend des Kalten Krieges, Veroffentlichungen im Kalten Krieg und Lesen wahrend des Kalten Krieges. Das Forschungsgebiet ist neu und hat eine noch kaum abzuschatzende Breite, nicht zuletzt durch die seit der Wende in Mittel- und Osteuropa zuganglich gewordenen Archive.
