Engelbert von Admont ( 1331) war einer der ersten Gelehrten im Reich nordlich der Alpen, der sich auf der Grundlage von Aristoteles mit Fragen der politischen Theorie befasste. Bereits als Student in Prag und Padua hat er sich die neuen Ubersetzungen der Aristotelischen Ethik, Politik und Rhetorik angeeignet. Spater, als Abt des Benediktinerklosters Admont, verfolgte er das Ziel, dieses neue Wissen durch eigene Schriften im bildungstopographischen Rand Europas bekannt zu machen. Sein Tugendspiegel, der hier erstmals in einer kritischen Edition vorgelegt wird, ist in den Jahren 1306-1313 entstanden. Das Werk sticht insbesondere dadurch hervor, dass es vorbehaltlos an die Ethik des Aristoteles anschliesst und christliches Gedankengut konsequent ausser Acht lasst. Engelbert umschreibt eine Tugendethik, die mit dem Besitz von Reichtum, der Ausubung politischer Herrschaft und dem Erwerb von Ehre nicht nur vereinbar, sondern notwendig verknupft ist. Diese Adelsethik kommt ohne klerikale Bevormundung, ohne den Verweis auf die hoher-stehende Lebensform des Monchtums aus. Engelbert widmete seine Schrift den habsburgischen Herzogen Albrecht (II.) und Otto und wollte sie so als Unterweisung fur seine Landesfursten im speziellen und fur den Adel seiner Zeit im allgemeinen verstanden wissen.
