Im Zentrum der vorliegende Studie steht Jacob Burckhardts kunsthistorisches Schaffen. Burckhardt unterscheidet bei den Werken der bildenden Kunst, vor allem der Malerei, eine mehr die Erzahlung betonende und eine eher das Dasein herausstellende Auffassungsweise, wodurch die bei Giorgio Vasari uberlieferte Gegenuberstellung von disegno und colore abgelost werden sollte. Die Kunst stellt nach Burckhardt nicht nur Leben dar, sie verfugt selbst uber ein Leben, das ihr eine weitgehende Selbstandigkeit der Geschichte gegenuber zuerkennt, so dass ihr Werdegang durch die Jahrhunderte als ein aus eigener Schwache oder Kraft erfolgtes Absterben oder Wiederaufleben – wie in der Renaissance – verstanden werden kann.
