Man konne die Geschichte der Volker und Kulturen nicht verstehen, wenn man deren Geld keine Beachtung schenke, hat Wilhelm Ropke einmal angemerkt. Dieser Einsicht folgend, untersucht Hendrik Makeler Geschichte und Bedeutung des Geldes in den deutschen Landen des Spatmittelalters – insbesondere unter verfassungsgeschichtlichen Aspekten. Diese verdeutlichen etwa die Anfange des Hundertjahrigen Krieges und die Konigswahl Karls IV., denn in der zunehmend monetarisierten Politik waren Geldzahlungen nun ein bevorzugtes Machtmittel. Aufgrund ihrer enormen Hohe beeinflussten sie massgeblich die Entwicklung der Geldtheorie und die Organisation der Munzpragung im europaischen Raum. Doch auch den alltaglichen Umgang der Menschen mit geringeren Betragen nimmt der Autor am Beispiel von Ablasskollektoren, Kaufleuten, Stadtraten und Studenten in den Blick. Die Arbeit schliesst damit eine Forschungslucke, die die Geldgeschichtsschreibung fur den deutschen Raum im spaten Mittelalter aufweist.
