Das Ende einer Festung war normalerweise beim militarischen Ernstfall besiegelt, aber viel ofter wurden Militarbauwerke auch ‘am grunen Tisch’ aufgegeben: als veraltet, strategisch unbedeutend, zu marode. Sie wurden geschleift, umgebaut und umgenutzt oder einfach dem Verfall uberlassen.
