Nachdem die Kunstgeschichte im 20. Jahrhundert erfolgreich bemuht war, die Fixierung auf das Kunstlersubjekt zu uberwinden, ist um die Jahrtausendwende die Figur des Kunstlers wieder verstarkt in ihren Fokus geraten. Die Kunstler/innen-Forschung geht heute von einer theoretisch und methodologisch neu reflektierten Basis aus. Anstatt naiv das Leben oder die Seele des Kunstlers zum Ausgangspunkt der Analyse zu machen, begreift sie die Verbindung von Biografie, Sozialstatus, psychischer Konstitution, Habitus und Werk als komplexe Konstruktionen, die es in ihrer je spezifischen historischen Situation zu analysieren gilt. Der vorliegende Band gibt – konzentriert auf die Moderne vom 19. Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart – einen Einblick in die aktuelle Kunstler/innen-Forschung.
