Preserved in far greater numbers than the sketches, notes, drafts, or copied drawings of famous artists and architects such as Brunelleschi, Francesco di Giorgio Martini, Michelangelo, Raphael and Durer are those of the assistants, employees, illustrators, copyists, and lesser masters who can no longer be identified today. Their work, however, often contains the thoughts of the main protagonists or reflects a wider discourse. The diversity of the content lies in the nature of the book as the medium. A topic often goes beyond a single page and unfolds in the context of the folio and the dimensions of the codex. Sketch books provide one of the richest and most sophisticated sources for the study of buildings of the 15th and 16th centuries, determining the architecture of that period and continuing to resonate in the contemporary architecture of today.
