The third volume of the Corpus Draculianum records the entire collection of Ottoman writings on the historical figure of Dracula. In numerous, previously partly undiscovered sources, Muslim, predominantly Ottoman, and even Christian post-Byzantine authors introduce readers to the ‘Middle-Eastern Dracula’. For Vlad the Impaler was a well-known and notorious figure not only in Western and Eastern Europe, but also in Byzantine and Ottoman literature. Based on oral and written eyewitness reports circulating in South Eastern Europe during the decades after the military campaign of 1462, a very distinct image of the Wallachian voivode kept emerging and circulating which in terms of narrative quality and reliable sources was equal to similar European records of the time.

Thirty-five authors present each reference to Vlad in the form of a critical edition of the original text including a translation, an introduction, a bibliography and a comments section, thus placing the figure of Dracula in an authentic historical context by means of an “untouched biography.” The genealogical statistical systemization and chapter based presentation of the texts, including various indices, maps and a detailed chronology, mean that the collection can also be used as an encyclopedic reference work. German description: Der dritte Band des Corpus Draculianum dokumentiert die gesamte osmanische Uberlieferung zur historischen Dracula-Gestalt. In zahlreichen, zum Teil bisher unbekannten Quellen kommen neben muslimischen, meist osmanischen, auch christliche postbyzantinische Autoren zu Wort und machen den Leser mit dem “orientalischen” Dracula bekannt. Denn Vlad, der Pfahler war nicht nur im westlichen und ostlichen Europa, sondern auch in der byzantinischen und osmanischen Literatur eine bekannte und beruchtigte Gestalt. Auf Grundlage mundlicher und schriftlicher Augenzeugenberichte, die in den Jahrzehnten nach dem Feldzug des Jahres 1462 in Sudosteuropa zirkulierten, wurde dabei ein ganz eigenes Bild des walachischen Woiwoden kreiert und tradiert, das der zeitgenossischen europaischen Uberlieferung an narrativem Gehalt und Quellenwert in nichts nachsteht. Die Quellen werden nicht nur erstmals in ihrer Gesamtheit der Forschung zuganglich gemacht, sondern bieten sich auch als lohnende Lekture fur den allgemein an den Dracula-Mythen und der mittelalterlichen Geschichte Sudosteuropas interessierten Leser zur Lekture an. Die von 35 Autoren uberlieferten Erwahnungen Vlads werden durch kritische Edition der Originaltexte mit Ubersetzung, Einfuhrung, Bibliographie und Kommentar wiedergegeben und die Figur des Dracula wird so im Sinne einer “untouched biography” in ihren authentischen historischen Kontext gestellt. Die textgenealogische statistische Systematisierung und kapitelweise Darstellung der Texte mit verschiedenen Registern, Karten und einer ausfuhrlichen Chronologie machen die Edition zugleich auch als enzyklopadisches Nachschlagewerk nutzbar.
