Als Heinrich dem Lowen 1180 die Reichslehen entzogen wurden, bedeutete dies eine Zasur, deren Folgen das Reich noch fur Jahrzehnte beschaftigen sollten. Unmittelbar betroffen waren die welfischen Sohne, die ihre Handlungsspielraume im Ordnungsgefuge von Konigen und Fursten, Herzogtumern und Herrschaften an der Wende des 12. zum 13. Jahrhundert aus alten Traditionen und neuen Moglichkeiten entwickelten. Die vorliegende Studie widmet sich der Biographie des altesten Sohnes des Lowen im Rahmen der verwandtschaftlichen Bindungen der Welfen sowie der Bilder und Inszenierungen furstlichen Handelns. Durch diesen Heinrich (1227) wurden mit dem alten Herzogtum Sachsen und der Pfalzgrafschaft bei Rhein zwei Regionen mit sehr unterschiedlichen Entwicklungen zusammengefasst. Heinrichs Urkunden geben Aufschluss daruber, wie furstliche Integrationskraft Wurden und Guter zusammenband, bevor das Territorium zum Bezugspunkt politischer Ordnung wurde.
