Der Benediktinerabt Engelbert von Admont ( 1331) kronte seine “staatstheoretischen” Schriften (De regimine principum, Speculum virtutum) spatestens im Jahre 1313 mit einem Traktat uber Entstehung, Entwicklung und Ende des Romischen Reiches als letzte Weltmonarchie der Gesamtgeschichte. Damit schaltete er sich in eine hochpolitische Diskussion ein, die sich dadurch ergeben hatte, dass nach einer jahrzehntelangen kaiserlosen Zeit mit dem Luxemburger Heinrich VII. wieder ein deutscher Konig eine Kaiserkronung in Rom durchsetzen konnte und den damit verbundenen Anspruch auf Weltherrschaft so offensiv vertrat, dass er damit den Widerstand der sich entwickelnden europaischen Nationalstaaten provozierte. In der ausserst kontrovers gefuhrten Debatte um eine universale bzw. nationale Perspektive der Politikbegrundung nimmt Engelbert eine eigenstandige Stellung ein, am ehesten noch vergleichbar mit seinem Zeitgenossen Dante Alighieri. Die erste kritische Edition arbeitet alle bekannten Uberlieferungen und Rezeptionen auf, rekonstruiert den Wortlaut moglichst authentisch und mochte in der Quellenanalyse und im Kommentar Engelberts unverwechselbares Profil im damaligen Zeitdiskurs herausarbeiten – auch in dem, was er verschweigt. Der steirische Abt stand, wenn er nicht uberhaupt ubersehen wurde, oft nur im Schatten seiner grossen Nachfolger Wilhelm von Occam und Marsilius von Padua. Dabei war er in manchem “moderner” als Marsilius, und manche seiner Denkprobleme lassen sich unschwer sogar bis in unsere gegenwartigen politischen Diskussionen hinein verfolgen.
