What is it about materialism in literary studies? Is there one materialism or a plurality of materialisms? And what is the relationship between new and old materialisms? Following Marx’s metaphor of ‘Umstulpen’, the book undertakes a remapping of materialist analysis in literary studies: The notions of realism and ideology prove to be closely intertwined with materialist theories of form and production of literature. Approaches to materialist world literature studies are brought into conversation with postcolonial and intersectional perspectives. Finally, the horizon of current debates includes questions of care work and platform work in contemporary literature. Through exemplary analyses and theoretical contextualization, the volume thus rediscovers materialist theory for the purpose of literary studies.
