Essays on the chronology and interpretation of the Byzantine mosaics of Thessaloniki. Edited collection of papers by expert authors, originally presented at a symposium held in 2014 at the Courtauld Institute of Art. 67 colour illustrations.

The impetus for the workshop was the recent publication The Mosaics of Thessaloniki, 4th-14th century (Athens: Kapon editions, 2012), by C. Bakirtzis, E. Kourkoutidou-Nikolaidou and Ch. Mavropoulou-Tsiumi; which has provided an exemplary documentation of the mosaics of Thessaloniki, featuring images of exceptional quality (many hitherto unpublished). From the Foreword by A.P. Leventis: “Titled ‘The Mosaics of Thessaloniki Revisited’ this publication makes an intriguing contribution to the study of Byzantine material culture, not least because it underlines the importance of revisiting, rethinking and reconsidering our views on the Byzantine world. Even, in the study of monuments as well-known as those of Thessaloniki, the volume makes clear that much remains yet to be deciphered and fully understood and that there are many unanswered questions still. As the papers that follow underline, in studying Byzantium and in our attempted reading of a world so far removed from our own, there is still much to be discovered, which, in turn, will inform what we already know. Only by persevering and by keeping academic discourse and exchange vibrant, can we hope to come closer to an understanding of the material remains of this interesting and alluring world.”
