Spirite

In Spirite, Guy de Malivert yields to the temptation to live out, in death, an ideal of love made impossible in modern life. Firmly rooted in the fantastique tradition, this tale is at once Gautier’s spiritual testament, the summation of his lifelong imaginative preoccupations, the culmination of his fiction, and his most autobiographical work.
