Rolandin
by Remi Usseil, preface by Jacques Tremolet de Villers
The beautiful Gisele, sister of Charlemagne, and the dashing Milon, Duke of Anjou, are madly in love with each other. Alas, the King of France opposes their union. Outside the bonds of marriage, the princess gives herself to her lover and becomes pregnant: her son will be Roland, the legendary paladin, future hero of the battle of Roncesvalles. Fleeing the anger of Charlemagne, but protected by mysterious ladies draped with light, the lovers seek refuge in Italy and settle near the city of Sutre. It is here that the child, nicknamed Rolandin, will live his first years as a simple lumberjack son, sharing his days between the school of the learned master Pierre and the wild forest. Many trials await the boy, but Rolandin is not afraid of anything, and these are not some rascals, a greedy pig, a learned cleric, a petty lord or a hungry ogre who will impress! He will throw himself headlong into all the adventures, hoping nevertheless to have gone home to his parents in time for supper.

Remi Usseil studied Modern Literature at Universite Stendhal in Grenoble. His keen interest in medieval literature and mythology induced him to devote his dissertation to the character of Gawain in novels about the Round Table, under the leadership of Philippe Walter, an expert on Arthurian literature. Currently, his work is focused on helping the general reading public gain more insight into these unrecognised epic poems known as chansons de geste. Jacques Tremolet de Villers has litigated many civil and criminal cases of a political, ideological and media-related nature. As a writer, he has published Aux marches du palais, a biography of the famous 19th-century lawyer, Pierre-Antoine Berryer, as well as Heureux qui comme Ulysse, a commentary from his anthology of French poetry, Vingt-quatre poemes que nous devrions savoir par coeur pour les dire a nos enfants.
