En face de la jeune fille moderne, les Goncourt ont voulu nous montrer le jeune homme moderne tel que le font (...) la fortune des doctrinaires, le regne du parlementarisme . Formellement, le roman s'avere interessant par sa structure theatrale et les enchainements tres etudies entre de courts chapitres donnant beaucoup d'allant au recit ; stylistiquement, il inspirera beaucoup d'oeuvres ulterieures par son rendu vif et percutant de la langue orale.
