Ravenna gehort neben Rom und Konstantinopel zu den bedeutendsten Kunst- und Kulturzentren im spatromischen Imperium Romanum. Auf engstem Raum haben sich hier zahlreiche Bauten aus dem 5. und 6. Jh. erhalten, bekannt vor allem durch ihre einzigartige Mosaikkunst. Der aufwandig illustrierte, auf neuen Erkenntnissen basierende Band dient einem interessierten Publikum als Begleiter zur Erkundung der fruhchristlichen Baukunst vor Ort.
