Die sechs Kapitel befassen sich mit zeitlich abgegrenzten Entwicklungsphasen. Ihre Strukturierung erleichtert den Zugang zu den Geschehnissen: Einem Uberblick uber die fur den jeweiligen Zeitabschnitt wesentlichen gesellschafts- und wissenschaftspolitischen Linien schliesst sich eine Psychotherapiechronik mit den Fakten an. Danach wird der Verfahrensentwicklung von Psychodynamischer Einzel- und Intendierter Dynamischer Gruppenpsychotherapie, Gesprachspsychotherapie, Verhaltenstherapie, Katathym-imaginativer Psychotherapie, Kommunikativer Bewegungstherapie/Konzentrativer Entspannung und Musiktherapie ebenso Raum gegeben wie auch der Integration der Psychotherapie in die Breite der Medizin, zum Beispiel bei der Balintarbeit. Jedes Kapitel schliesst mit Geschichten aus dem Alltag der Psychotherapeuten sowie mit Interviews und Berichten von Zeitzeugen ab. Ein Anhang mit wichtigen Dokumenten, Weiterbildungsrichtlinien und Registern komplettiert das Buch. Die Frage, wie es den meisten Psychotherapeuten in der DDR-Diktatur gelang, trotz Stasi und politischer Indoktrination ihre Integritat aufrechtzuerhalten und den Anschluss an internationale Entwicklungen herzustellen, durchzieht alle Beitrage.
