La liberte s’est dite au Moyen Age en de multiples acceptions. Elle revet d’abord une dimension sociale et politique (on dit ainsi libre l’homme qui, n’etant pas esclave, jouit de certains droits, comme on dit libres les cites qui jouissent de certaines franchises); elle revet d’autre part une dimension anthropologique, lorsque l’on parle du libre arbitre par lequel l’homme echappe au determinisme. Cette question du libre arbitre se decline elle aussi pluriellement. On se demande en effet : dans quelle mesure l’action humaine echappe-t-elle a la contrainte? L’homme ne pourrait-il etre libre que si des alternatives contingentes s’offrent a lui? Un agent est-il libre si son action n’est pas determinee par des causes? Enfin, peut-il etre a la fois libre et dans l’incapacite de faire le bien? Ces problematiques philosophiques s’accompagnent au Moyen Age d’un enjeu theologique. Comment l’homme peut-il etre libre si son action est prevue d’avance par la connaissance que Dieu en a, mais egalement si Dieu l’a predestine a agir? Agit-il encore librement, si, pour bien agir, il a besoin de la grace? Parce que, tout a la fois, elle pose le probleme du determinisme, qu’elle envisage la responsabilite de l’homme, qu’elle engage l’ethique, qu’elle interroge, enfin, l’action divine dans l’histoire, la question de la liberte est au Moyen Age une question fondamentale. Cet ouvrage, fruit d’un dialogue entre historiens et philosophes, voudrait permettre d’avancer sur ces questions.
