From Orpheus charming the animals to Levinas’ cockroach, the history of opera is filled with allegorical animals, featuring as mere minor characters or as the real protagonists of the plot. This book traces the adventure of this lyrical bestiary in which the song of the animal mixes with that of man, and sometimes replaces it.
