Aux confins de l’Asie centrale et de l’Inde, sur les terres de Nagarahara – l’ancienne Jallalabad – et Hadda (Afghanistan), Peshawar, Swat et Taxila (Pakistan), a la limite du inonde grec mediterraneen et du nord-ouest de l’Inde, s’est developpe au debut de l’ere chretienne un art qui allia d’une facon tres pertinente l’esthetique grecque avec l’iconographie bouddhique. Le mariage entre deux mondes que tout separait engendra l’art dit greco-bouddhique. L’universite Marc Bloch (Strasbourg II), depuis longtemps un haut lieu de l’orientalisme, renoue avec l’art et l’archeologie du monde bouddhique avec ce colloque international qui reunissait a Strasbourg en mars 2000 une quinzaine de specialistes. Parmi les communications presentees a cette occasion, le present ouvrage reunit les contributions de A. D. H. Bivar (Londres), Ariela Bollati (Turin) Osmund Bopearachchi (Paris) Elizabeth Errington (Londres) Anna Filigenzi (Rome) Nakao Odani (Toyama), Anna Maria Quagliotti (Naples), Francine Tissot (Paris), Haruko Tsuchiya (Kamakura) et une importante etude sur la ceramique de Hadda, par Zemafyalai Tarzi (Strasbourg), directeur de la mission francaise de prospection et de fouilles de Bamiyan.
