In the entry for the year 1710 in the Mémoires, the “Intrigue surrounding the marriage of the Duke of Berry’” forms a major narrative enclave in which Saint-Simon gives vent to his fantasies of omnipotence, manoeuvring the great figures of this world like living pieces on the vast chessboard of society. The studies gathered here seek to capture what makes Saint-Simon’s Mémoires an extraordinary narrative adventure worthy of being compared by Marcel Proust to his own Recherche and to the Mille et une nuit.
