| This book aims at investigating certain fields of human activity in this highly important Late Byzantine urban centre. Two were the criteria for choosing the particular aspects: a) The presence of relevant written sources and the preservation of buildings to a degree that allows posing questions, building hypotheses, and reaching as reliable as possible conclusions; b) The presentation of aspects that have not been so far thoroughly discussed or have been briefly mentioned, thus leaving, despite the abundance of available material, important questions unanswered.
Besides the list of all architectural remains and their description, this book contains a preliminary analysis of the data and the conclusions reached as far as space organisation within the walled town is concerned. The form of the street network, the elements that formed it, its effect on the urban plan, as well as street construction are examined; moreover, a brief overview of the means of transport and the bodies guarding the streets based on the remains of the Mistra street network and, at the same time, those from other towns from the same period is also included. Subsequently, suggestions are made concerning the use of the limited open spaces, mainly foros, the square in front of the palace, a feature unparalleled in other Late Byzantine fortified urban centres. |
