Trapiantato dalla originaria Ferrara a Milano nell’ultimo quarto dell’Ottocento per studiare all’Accademia di Brera e dedicarsi alla pittura, Giuseppe Mentessi (1857-1931) diventa un personaggio di riferimento nel vivace ambiente culturale progressista cittadino del tempo. In parallelo alla sua affermazione artistica e al suo lungo impegno nella didattica, egli sviluppa anche un forte spirito di condivisione delle istanze del socialismo umanitario ambrosiano, partecipando generosamente alle iniziative promosse da Luigi Majno ed Ersilia Bronzini come l’Unione femminile nazionale, di cui e uno dei fondatori, e l’Asilo Mariuccia. Il volume intende rivisitare e riproporre la figura di Giuseppe Mentessi attraverso tre segmenti – il pittore, il docente e il filantropo – grazie alle preziose carte dell’archivio personale dell’artista, giunto all’Unione femminile, che di recente ne ha promosso un attento riordino.
